CES, Inc.’s Project Awarded Top State Environmental Excellence Award
BREWER, MAINE- The Maine Department of Environmental Protection announced that the Presque Isle Landfill Design/Build Project has been named as the 2015 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in the Public Sector. CES, Inc., a Maine based firm of engineers, environmental scientists, and professional surveyors, is the City’s environmental and engineering consultant for this project.
The City, CES, Sargent Corporation, and the DEP collaborated on a final cover system for nine acres of solid waste to minimize surface infiltration from traveling into the waste and causing leachate to migrate into an aging leachate collection system associated with the first phase of the landfill. CES designed and the City implemented a new state-of-the-art landfill expansion five years ago. The final cover reduces the amount of leachate generated by approximately 1 million gallons per year.
This prestigious award recognizes businesses, nonprofit organizations and public entities for their extraordinary efforts to protect and improve Maine’s environment.
“The design/build project delivery approach, which is a collaborative method of integrating engineering and construction, resulted in an alternative design that reduced impacts to the environment, met environmental protection regulations, and reduced overall project costs. Using this project delivery method, we were able to save our client over $900,000, and delivered a final product ahead of schedule and a year before the reimbursement deadline,” said CES President/CEO Denis St. Peter. “I’m proud that CES’ role in the Presque Isle Design/Build Project contributed to a financially successful and environmentally sustainable solid waste solution for the City and its residents. As one of the success factors, all team members from CES, Sargent, DEP and the City provided valuable input throughout the project.”
In the coming weeks a DEP representative will present the award to the City, CES, and Sargent in Presque Isle.
Founded in 1978, CES is headquartered in Brewer with five other locations throughout Maine. CES’ team of approximately 70 employees includes licensed Registered Professional Engineers, Certified Geologists, Certified Soil Scientists, Professional Land Surveyors, Professional Foresters, GIS Analysts, CAD Technicians, and Environmental Scientists.
