Environmental Monitoring
"I have had to rely greatly on CES, and I am thankful they were there.
They are a tremendous help in ensuring compliance, and also in sharing experience
and knowledge with me to get me up to speed as quickly as possible.”
-William Day, Plant Engineer, Maine Independence Station
Ground Water and Surface Water Monitoring
CES conducts monitoring activities for more than 100
projects involving ground water and surface water
monitoring. These projects include a number of solid waste,
industrial, and processing type facilities. CES staff is
responsible for all client contact, interaction with State
and/or Federal officials, overview and scheduling of
environmental monitoring field personnel, review and
reporting of data, and electronic data management. A major
component of these services include the utilization of the
most current technology and specialized equipment for sample
collection in order to insure that the most accurate data is
obtained. This is especially important relative to ground
water monitoring. The environmental monitoring staff at CES
was one of the first consultants to utilize MDEP/EPA
approved protocols for low flow ground water purging and
sampling techniques. Based on the number of clients and the
number of projects completed by CES environmental monitoring
staff, we are one of the most experienced ground water
sampling consultants in the State. Many environmental
monitoring programs include requirements for surface water
monitoring. These locations also require specific
techniques for sample collection which have been approved
for many CES projects. In addition to environmental
monitoring activities, CES has, also, prepared a number of
Environmental Monitoring Plans (EMPs) which have been
approved by both State and Federal agencies. EMPs are
required for a number of ground water and surface water
monitoring programs to insure representative monitoring
results.
Wastewater Monitoring
CES environmental monitoring projects include a number
of wastewater monitoring projects. These projects are
generally related to meeting the requirements of waste
discharge licenses and wastewater treatment facility
pre-treatment standards. CES staff is again responsible
for all client contact, interaction with State and/or
Federal officials, overview and scheduling of
environmental monitoring field personnel, review and
reporting of data, and electronic data management. This
also includes managing and reporting of data via the
Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR) format. For projects
related to pre-treatment standards CES staff is
responsible for coordinating monitoring activities with
appropriate wastewater treatment plant personnel and
insuring that data is reported in the proper format.
Sample collection protocol and proper sample handling is
a major component of these types of monitoring
programs. CES has been recommended and hired to conduct
training of facility personnel related to required
sample collection, handling, and reporting of data.
Storm Water Monitoring
CES has assisted numerous facilities with their
storm water discharge monitoring and helping them to
comply with the numeric limitations established in
the EPA and MDEP MSGP for Storm Water Discharges
Associated with Industrial Activities. CES submits
this data to the EPA / MDEP through Discharge
Monitoring Reports (DMRs).
Waste, Ash, Oil, etc.
Sampling
CES staff also conducts miscellaneous types of
sampling which may be required. In general,
this type of sampling may include a variety of
different types of material. Typically, this
type of sampling requires specific sampling
techniques, analysis and safety. CES staff has
conducted hundreds of projects related to this
type of sampling. Many times, these projects
require analysis of data and comparing data to
the appropriate State and/or Federal standards
and guidelines and working with appropriate
facilities for disposal of special and hazardous
water type material.
