Design/Build
US Coast Guard Station, Eastport Port Authority, Eastport, Maine
CES worked in conjunction with the Eastport Port Authority and the General Services Administration (GSA) to develop a new facility for the US Coast Guard. Initially, CES assisted the Port Authority in the compiling of a bid package for this competitively bid project. Upon selection, CES coordinated a team of design professionals and a contractor under a Design/Build format to successfully meet the time constraints imposed on this homeland security project. When rising steel prices and limited availability threatened the project schedule, CES developed a panelized light gage framing structural system to keep the project within the budget and time constraints required by the GSA. The framing scheme used allowed for the walls to be fabricated off-site at the contractor’s workshop under controlled conditions, and shipped to the site ready for erection. Controlled construction conditions produced a higher quality product, and fast-tracking this phase of construction allowed the contractor to overcome many of the problems associated with winter construction, while meeting the tight schedule required by the client. The project involved addressing the special security issues related to homeland security functions. Fast response to security threats and environmental disasters, as well as the special climate control requirements of communications equipment required particular attention to site development and building design to assure all of the Coast Guard’s needs were met.
CES also provided oversight during construction and commissioning of the US Coast Guard Station. Construction on this $1.9 million project was successfully completed in a rigorous six month time frame.
