Howland Tannery, Howland, Maine
Since it
closed in 1971, the tannery has been a symbol of the Town’s
economic doldrums. Today the site has new hope in becoming a focal
point for community revitalization efforts. A team of experts, lead by
CES, is guiding the Town through a process which involved clean-up efforts to
remediate several areas of tannery debris, sludge, solid waste, and
petroleum contamination along the shores of the Penobscot River. Our
environmental staff has worked closely with Town leaders to develop a
remediation plan that will help make the site usable for other reuse
opportunities in the future. The project involves a cover system
and landscape
restoration plan. Currently, CES is coordinating a “visioning process”
to determine what options for reuse would most benefit the town and
surrounding communities after the cover system is installed. The project
is being funded through stimulus dollars provided from the EPA
Brownfields Program. SERVICES PROVIDED
