CES currently assists 8 out of the 10 regulated Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) here in the Bangor Urbanized Area in complying with the DEP Stormwater Program’s MS4 General Permit for Stormwater Discharges. Our clients include Brewer, Veazie, Hampden, Old Town, Orono, Milford, University of Maine, and University College of Bangor. As part of DEP MS4 General Permit compliance, each of the MS4s must educate the public on stormwater pollution issues and involve the public in local events intended to raise awareness. For the past 3 years, the Bangor Area Storm Water Group, which is comprised of all the MS4s in the Bangor region, has sponsored a stream cleanup event. Each of the MS4s has held a cleanup on the same day to increase public participation and awareness of stormwater issues.

This past year, several CES employees participated in the events held in Orono, Brewer, and Hampden. Phil Ruck assisted the Town of Orono in organizing their 3rd annual event in May. During the event, 5 crews collected in excess of 30 trash bags of garbage as well as other large items including 1 television, scrap metal and old tires. Over 50 people participated, which exceeded last year’s turnout, even though the weather forecast was not promising. The Orono Fire Department put on a great barbecue afterwards. John Pond, Kyle Sullivan and his son Josh participated in the 3rd annual Brewer event run by Ken Locke, the City Environmental Services Director. Ken does a fantastic job at organizing both City staff and volunteers. At the Brewer event, over 170 people volunteered. A huge cookout was held afterwards at the Brewer Auditorium. Denis St. Peter participated in the 2nd annual Hampden event at which around 20 people volunteered. Stream Cleanups.
